Program Overview
Ram Island Yacht Club offers an eight-week junior sail training program for beginning sailors to advanced racers in Optimist and Club 420 dinghies.  We grow sailors' skills through supportive camaraderie, teamwork, and boat handling experience.  While racing skills development is always available, we seek to create deep appreciation for the lessons and friendships that come from a summer spent in small boats.

Non-members and members' grandchildren may participate if sponsored by a memberfor a nominal fee.

Morning Program (Optis)
Intended for younger (and lighter) sailors who appreciate the generally lighter winds.
The Tue/Thurs class is designed to make our youngest and greenest sailors feel comfortable.

Afternoon Program (Optis/420s)
Intended for more experienced racers who want to practice in a range of conditions.  420 sailors must each weigh at least 90 lbs with a combined crew weight of 200 lbs or more.

Club-owned Optis and 420s may be available for use for a fee.

Boat Policy:
While most returning sailors bring their own Optimist or Club 420 to the program, the club also has some boats available for a fee.  Participants interested in this option must confirm availability by emailing juniorsailing@ramislandyachtclub.org before registration.  All boats (even those used last year) must be ready for safety inspection on June 18.  It is the parents’ responsibility to ensure that boats remain in good working order throughout the summer -- boats and rigging that don’t work well are a safety concern.  RIYC is not responsible for lost gear or damage to boats.

Swim Check:
A swim check will be given during the first week of the program. All sailors must pass the swim check prior to sailing. This test will consist of swimming 25 yards without a life jacket (except for the youngest sailors), tread water for 3 minutes, and put on their life jacket while in the water.

Junior Instructors:
Older, experienced sailors (generally 12 years or more) are encouraged to consider participating as a junior instructor. This opportunity offers leadership and sailing instruction experience in a supportive environment.  Interested sailors should contact juniorsailing@ramislandyachtclub.org for more information.
