Welcome to my last RIYC newsletter submission as Commodore
Oddly, this is that most difficult submission I’ve written. It’s harder for me to move on than anticipated and I found myself reflecting on things left undone and things that may have done differently.
Nonetheless, the club has seen a fair amount of change in the last few years. I like to believe that the changes were thoughtful and progressive, but I know the world has many perspectives. To address those perspectives, I offer the following to ponder: change is constant. Nothing ever remains the same, but we can choose to proactively make changes (where appropriate) and use them to chart the club’s future. This is where you come in….
We, the club leadership, need to hear your thoughts and ideas. If you have a thought, idea, or concern please raise it directly to a Trustee/Flag Officer. If you are thinking or feeling it, odds you are not alone. However, when you provide feedback please remember that being a Flag Officer or Trustee is not an easy job and we do the best we can. Assume good intent in the Board’s decisions and deliver your feedback in a way that you would like to receive feedback.
To the members of the 2018-2019 Board, especially those whose term is complete, I’d like to thank each of you for your tireless service. It was a pleasure to serve with each of you.
To the entire membership, I want to assure you that the club is in great hands with the oncoming Board and Leadership.
Report from the Entertainment Committee – Rodney Denman and Denise Kennedy

Report from the Race Committee
Race Ashore – Tina McLoughlin
Logistically the event went very well. Based on feedback before and during the party it was determined that there is an opportunity to improve change management, communication and setting of expectations for next year.
Race Afloat – Moise Solomon
Moise summarized lessons-learned to the Board obtained through written and verbal comments from some members and participants. Overall the race went very well with a few logistical hiccups that the capable race committee handled seamlessly. The race was run around the island in a clockwise direction to make best use of available wind and current. Sufficient wind was present for a great race, which was lucky given the extensive and persistent light breezes we have had this summer. The attendance was down a few boats, and speculation is that was due to the light air with most Melges and Vipers not participating. It is recommended that additional club members obtain training to be a principal race officer, and broaden participation from additional club members next year to help deepen the experience pool.
Report from the House Committee – Matt Lettrich, Frank Bohlen and Fred Haberlandt
The south-side locker door project has resumed. Occupants of lockers to be worked will be informed and requested to secure the contents for the approximately two days that replacement requires. The Committee will be developing a work list for winter projects.
Strategic / Long Range Planning – Blake Powell, Fred Haberlandt and John Watson
The committee will assemble a recommendation for parking lot paving and other related work; the goal is to submit the recommendation to the Board in October. Initiatives being considered include:
- Contouring and paving; retaining the drainage swale through the center of the lot (street to ramp) while raising the level to reduce routine, and storm flooding.
- Inclusion of permeable paving (e.g., filled X-block) at the seaward side of the lot (replacing grass) and possibly creating a similar street-side border. The intent is to retain the existing boat storage and rigging area.
- Raising the seawall approximately 12 inches south of the main dock to mitigate wave damage from storm events.
- Extending the submerged end of the launch ramp to accommodate larger boats/trailers at low tide.

Report from the Waterfront Committee – Sandy Turner and Matt Champney
The Waterfront committee will be doing their annual inspection of the floats and main pier at the end of this month. The plan is to identify any areas that need to be replaced or repaired and generate a work list for the off season. If a member notices an area of concern please report it to Matt (email@example.com) or Sandy (firstname.lastname@example.org). It was determined that Junior sailing will take in the storage cylinders off the racks and Waterfront Committee will take off the racks during float hauling. Note was made that some faucets on the dock leak and there is a broken faucet handle by lower dinghy dock.
Hauling of the floats will occur on October 19th so mark your calendars!
Cruise News – Stan White
The Fall Cruise was a GREAT success (seven boats)! We had 20 people at a dinner ashore on Sunday night and then packed 16 people into the cockpit of LARK for a fun happy hour(s) on Monday night. Monday was spent island walking, bike riding and drinking Mudslides at the Oar.
We had perfect weather and sailing winds for three days. Hope to see even more boats on the 2020 cruises!
The Kings and Whites are trying to organize a French Canal Barge charter (4 or 6 people per boat) for September 2021. PLENTY of time to plan! If you want to be kept informed about the trip and, hopefully, join us, send an email to Peter (email@example.com) and Stan (firstname.lastname@example.org).
