RIYC December 2018 Newsletter

Commodore’s Message – Gary Annino

  • Greetings:
  • December is a quiet month for the Board of Trustees and we are all very thankful for that. The December Meeting of the Board of Trustees was short and to the point which allowed us to quickly adjourn and have a small holiday gathering for the Trustees and spouses. Last – The RIYC Board of Trustees would like to wish every member a happy and healthy holiday season as well as a prosperous 2019!Respectfully,Gary

Report from the Entertainment Committee – Rodney Denman and Denise Kennedy

The Children’s Holiday Party on December 1st and Club Holiday Party on December 8th were both well attended.  If you have photos of any of our events, please forward them to Stan White for inclusion in the Newsletter and on the Website!

Hosts are needed for 2019 party schedule.  Please contact Denise Kennedy or Rodney Denman.

Picnics are being planned for June 13 – September 12th.

Report from the Junior Program

Junior Sailing – Ann Bergendahl and Rob Warn

The Junior program is thinking about Santa and the great sailing related gifts under the tree! Nothing else to report.

Report from the Race Committee

Race Ashore – Tina McLoughlin and Race Afloat – Moise Solomon

The RIYC Regatta is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 24.  Saturday is a change from the usual Sunday date and will be further discussed with the Trustees and with the Membership before any final decision is made.

Report from the House Committee – Matt Lettrich and Fred Haberlandt

Other than routine housekeeping, there were no repairs required or improvements made, in the month of November. More volunteers are required for the committee!  Please contact Fred Haberlandt, Matt Lettrich or Frank Bohlen if you can help!

RIYC is in need of replacement covers (seat & back) for our wood framed “directors” chairs.  Please email your opinions to CHAIRS@LETTRICH.NET as to what the new chair covers should look like.
Some considerations are:
1.  Continue with the tradition of soliciting members to contribute to get their boat’s name on the canvas. This would, of course, increase the individual cost and triple the paperwork, but it’s my first choice.  This also does not eliminate the following considerations.
2. Minimize cost, do away with boat names, and simply:
  • Put “RIYC” on every chair, or
  • Put the RIYC burgee on every chair, or
  • Leave blank and preserve the natural beauty of the cotton canvas.
3. A color scheme will need to be decided upon:
  • Continue using white text on the blue background and accept that there will be “new” blue chairs and “faded” blue chairs side by side, or
  • Change the text color to yellow and continue with blue background material. This would intentionally contrast old from new, or
  • Change the color scheme to blue text on a golden yellow background thereby not attempting to match blue backgrounds, or
  • Other ideas?
4.    Combinations of 1 & 3 or 2 & 3.  Combinations of 1 & 2 still require a choice in 3.  Starting to sound complicated?  Talk to 3 people and you’ll understand…
The more opinions I get, the more I can share the blame, so please send yours to CHAIRS@LETTRICH.NET before the end of January.

Bylaws Subcommittee – Amy Leger

The Bylaws Subcommittee, led by Rear Commodore Amy Leger, has been working diligently over the last few weeks and expects to have a draft to review with Flag Officers shortly.  If all are in agreement, the updates will be presented to the Trustees for review at the January meeting, followed by a special meeting for full membership approval.

The subcommittee will have a red-lined version and clean version along with a letter/report that will go through each section to outline the changes and whether they are substantive or just cleaning up the language.

Strategic / Long Range Planning – Blake Powell

Key area leads are being contacted.  The plan is to have the first meetings in January and some groundwork will be done before then.   More information will be available for the January meeting.

Report from the Waterfront Committee – Sandy Turner and Matt Champney

The float launch date is tentatively scheduled for 4/13/19  (Easter is late this year); float haul is tentatively set for 10/19/19 (the weekend after Columbus Day).

Those members looking for dinghy dock space for next year should contact John McCrea.
