Commodore’s Message – Gary Annino
As announced under a separate email – the board of trustees agreed to partially support a three-year lease of two Ideal 18’s to provide access to sailing for its members (adult learn to sail, Ladies & Men’s inter-club racing, introduction to keel boats for Juniors, and as an attraction to new members). There is a financial gap to make this a reality. With the generous support of six “angel” donors, we have covered approximately 1/3 of the $16,000 financial gap. If you have interest in supporting this effort, please contact me directly with any questions or how you can pledge assistance. The current plan is to have full funding for this effort by next month’s Board meeting or end the pursuit. Please keep in mind that effort is in direct response from the survey feedback received from the membership.
Next, I’d like to thank the Board members and club volunteers for the recent flurry of activity as we get ready to commission the club for the season. Please take notice of the rebuilt floats, freshly cleaned carpets, new waterfront doors, Adirondack chairs, picnic tables and soon to be constructed replacement locker doors. These upgrades certainly help the welcoming appeal of the club.
Last, having just returned from Charleston Race Week, I’d like to mention how many friendly RIYC faces were at the event. It’s a long trip from our area but what was even more amazing was multi-generational RIYC representation which made it so meaningful. While there were many RIYC representatives present, I’d like to make a special shout out to Sarah Wilkinson who was available via text for on demand local hospitality recommendations. Every call and excellent choice and extremely well-orchestrated by a young lady preparing for college finals.

Race Ashore – Tina McLoughlin and Race Afloat – Moise Solomon
The Committee Chair met with Matt Curtiss and in addition to providing all of the materials from prior years, he suggested two items for consideration. 1) Matt strongly encourages us to consider changing the Race Ashore start time to 5 pm instead of “sometime after 2:30”. Masons Island and the Mudheads both start their parties at 5 pm. Additionally, Matt thinks it would be much easier for all of the volunteers if we have a set start time. It has been previously discussed and the Board was concerned that people might leave if the party is significantly later than the end of the race. 2) Matt also suggested that the club purchase a device (such as Square One) so we can accept credit cards.
The Board agreed that the start time for the party is up to the committee. There were some concerns that the start time may be a bit late; but it was also pointed out that the race is taking place on a Saturday so there is not as much need to start early.
The Board encouraged the committee to explore the cost of devices to process credit cards and return with additional information. The understanding is that these would be used to collect party payments, not sign-up fees. The device would be available for other events – the percentage remitted to the vendor may be an issue.

Practical Guide For Race Committees
Bob Austin-LaFrance will use the club on April 24 to hold a “Practical Guide for Race Committees” seminar. There are no fees involved in the class. It will be oriented towards interested members of ECSA.
Report from the House Committee – Matt Lettrich Frank Bohlen and Fred Haberlandt
- Installation of the riverside lower deck doors is complete.
- Professional cleaning of the carpet and other areas completed Thursday, 4/14. There was a follow-up field day Saturday (4/14), with focus on the kitchen. The support of those that participated is most appreciated.
- We now have three new (town-conforming) trash and three new recycling bins in the outside enclosure.
- As a result of the positive response to the new Adirondack chairs and picnic tables, the Officers and Trustees have authorized the purchase of eight more chairs and six more tables.
- Replacement of the outside toilets and repairs to the upstairs shower (approved last year) will complete shortly.
- The south-side outside locker door project has started (see photo of the approved design). We have established a “build” team and an “installation” team to accomplish this large, club member accomplished project. It is anticipated that doors will be replaced in lots of four as their fabrication completes. Locker “owners” will be notified when their doors are scheduled for replacement so that the contents can be secured while replacement is in progress. Your timely support will be appreciated.
Report from the Waterfront Committee – Sandy Turner and Matt Champney
Our float and dock projects are 99% complete. Our float crew has fixed 4 floats. We have new chains to connect the floats to the main Pier. The north side of the pier leading to the North set of floats has been structurally refit and new decking has been installed. The flagpole, which was overhauled last winter, has been looked over and is good to go. Once the floats are in we will be periodically inspecting the dock and floats for deck replacement.
The committee chairs would like to thank the float crew for their work in getting our projects ready. Sweat Equity does a long way!
REMEMBER: We need volunteers for float launch day. April 20th at 7am to 7:30 am show-up time. Ron Helbig will be there at 8am.
